A Physical Object in Digital Space
The most satisfying luxury packaging in the world is the spring-loaded ring box. Its weighted corners, the plush velvet cushion, and the deliberate resistance of the hinge all build anticipation before revealing what lies inside.
When you hold an iPhone Duo in your palm, its clamshell proportions match the exact dimensions of a pocket jewelry case. In Fold Ring, our goal was to eliminate the sensation that you are looking at a smartphone, replacing it with the tangible thrill of holding a physical jewelry box.
1-to-1 Hinge Synchronization
Many mobile 3D demos use pre-baked animations: you tap a button, and a box swings open. In Fold Ring, there are no canned animations.
Instead, our custom 3D shader engine is directly wired to the iPhone Duo’s angle sensor. If your hands open the phone by 15 degrees, the top lid tilts open by exactly 15 degrees. If you gently rock the lid back and forth at 45 degrees, the internal spring mechanism responds with micro-haptic tension.
Lighting the Sparkle
A diamond only looks real if it refracts light as your hands move. We implemented custom mobile Metal shaders to simulate:
- Faceted Caustic Sparkles: Diamond facets cast sharp, shimmering highlights that dance across the velvet as the device tilts.
- Microfiber Velvet Sheen: Realistic micro-surface scattering that absorbs ambient light exactly like plush jewelry packaging.
- Custom Inscriptions & Secret Notes: Users can slip a custom love note, poem, or anniversary message into the lid slot, revealed only upon unfolding.
"People hand the closed phone to their partner and say: 'Can you open this for a second?' The moment they crack the fold open, their eyes light up. That surprise is something no flat screen could ever deliver."
Designed for Real-World Micro-Moments
Whether rehearsing a grand romantic gesture, celebrating a milestone anniversary, or just sharing an intimate moment with someone special, Fold Ring turns high technology into warmth and connection.
